Spanish spacetech IENAI Space secures €3.9M to commercialize its propulsion system

Spanish space mobility startup IENAI Space has secured €3.9 million to increase the adoption of its software tools. The investment came from WA4STEAM, DPM, GED Conexo Ventures, and CDTI.

  • Founded in 2019 by Daniel Grande, Sara Plaza, Mick Wijnen, and David González, IENAI Space specializes in creating customized ionic-liquid electric propulsion systems for nanosatellites, incorporating CubeSats' plug-and-play philosophy. 
  • The startup develops software to design and optimize low-thrust propulsion. Its software enables satellites to travel further and endure longer missions, representing a notable advancement in small satellite propulsion capabilities. Additionally, IENAI’s ATHENA system utilizes electrospray thrusters, offering scalability and achieving high theoretical efficiencies even at low power levels. This combination of advanced propulsion technology and specialized software represents a significant advancement in the field of small satellite propulsion.
  • With clean-room facilities in Madrid, Barcelona, and Uppsala, Sweden, established through agreements with CNM-CSIC and Uppsala University, the startup employs a team of 22 and continues to expand its operations.

Details of the deal 

  • The funding round was backed by Barcelona-based WA4STEAM, a community of women angel investors, DPM, Madrid-based VC GED Conexo Ventures, and CDTI.
  • With the fresh funding, IENAI plans to commercialize its core products, build new facilities for its growing team, and increase software tool usage.
