CEE Startups Of The Month - June 2023

After looking at the set of diverse solutions featured in May, it's time to explore a new batch of startups that are definitely worth a look.

This time, we're shining a spotlight on the most exciting startups from Central & Eastern Europe that have already proven themselves while being part of the Hello Clean Tech Program.

ÄIO


ÄIO is an innovative biotech company  that replaces unsustainable fats (palm oil and animal fats)  with tastier, healthier, and environmentally friendly alternatives. With a €675.000 pre-seed investment from Nordic FoodTech VCs, ÄIO converts various side-streams into high-quality edible fats and oils.

Alinor


Alinor is developing a digital B2B platform tailored specifically for companies operating in the sustainable materials industry. Using Alinor, both Advanced Materials buyers and suppliers are able to easily discover, buy and sell the latest and most innovative sustainable materials available on the market, expanding their reach to global customers. 

Arkeon

Arkeon that utilizes microbial gas fermentation and enzyme technology to convert CO2 into customizable amino acids and peptides. These functional ingredients find applications in food, beverages, cosmetics, and industrial specialties. With the backing of prominent Venture Capital firms like Tet Ventures, aws Grunderfonds, FoodHack, ICL, Synthesis Capital, ReGen Ventures, and Square One Foods, Arkeon pioneers the use of CO2 as a feedstock to produce valuable protein ingredients.

Biosimo


Biosimo, an emerging company in our selection, producing renewable chemicals. Their cost-competitive solution enables the production of bulk chemicals from renewable sources, reducing carbon emissions. Biosimo's serves as direct replacements for traditional counterparts and fossil fuel-based methods, seamlessly integrating into existing company’s processes without compromising performance or quality.

Fermata

The next startup on the list, Fermata utilizes computer vision solutions to help farmers reduce crop losses and minimize pesticide usage. Their AI-powered platform detects pests and diseases early, allowing timely interventions by reducing chemical usage by 25% and crop losses by 30%.  With the backing of Raw Ventures Global, Fermata empowers farmers to combat climate change and improve crop production.

Hydrolyx 


Hydrolyx is an energy and chemistry technologies company that produces green hydrogen from wastewater. Hydrolyx focuses on reducing carbon emissions from energy-intensive industries, including iron-steel, aluminum, and fertilizer production. Additionally, the startup plans to use their modular technology to produce ammonia and methanol from wastewater. 

NANOSCI


NANOSCI utilizes photocatalytic nanomaterials to combat air pollution and improve public health. By offering licensing and specialized air purifiers, NANOSCI enables easy integration of their photocatalytic engine technology into various industries. Recent funding of €250,000 from Infini VC fuels their mission for cleaner air and disease prevention.

 

Nista.io


An up-and-coming company on our selection, nista.io offers Energy Efficiency as a Service to manufacturing SMEs, providing custom efficiency measures to reduce costs and improve CO2 footprint. Startup collects and analyzes sensor data, offers expert analysis, and presents efficiency measures through an "insight feed" for implementation. Nista.io has had a €1.5M pre-seed with funding rounds backed by investors like Katharo Ventures, IST Cube and Austria Wirtschaftsservice

Ourobio


The upcoming startup on our selection offers a sustainable solution for plastic dyeing. Ourobio is a synthetic biology company that converts industrial byproducts into biodegradable plastic additives using engineered microorganisms. Their unique technology simultaneously produces bio-based colorants and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) in a single fermentation process. Recently, the startup secured €140.000 from The Heritage Ventures Group.

Plenti


Plenti offers electronics rental services through a subscription model. Startup makes expensive consumer electronics more accessible by allowing customers to rent instead of buying. Plenti takes care of the entire product cycle, including repairs and recycling, promoting a circular economy. Plenti has raised a seed funding round of €5M from investors like 4growth VC, Montis Capital, NCBR Investment Fund ASI S.A., and AIP Seed.

Spark

Spark develops e-fuel production systems for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) using renewable electricity. Their innovative approach addresses power fluctuations and enables off-grid production in solar or wind-rich areas. This reduces the cost of SAF and makes sustainable flying more financially viable. Spark's focus is on engineering e-SAF production systems and recently has received funding from business angels in the amount of €200K.

 

TerGo

Last but not least, TerGo is a carbon footprint marketplace that helps companies count, reduce, and offset emissions. TerGo offers the TERbit app, which rewards users for reducing emissions, and the Tergoscope software for carbon accounting. They also operate an agroforestry project in Belize and are developing TergoMarket, a decentralized platform for tracking carbon offsets.
