Lyon-based Verley, which develops functional dairy proteins using precision fermentation, has raised $38 million in a Series A round led by Alven, with support from Blast Club and Bpifrance.
- Founded in 2022 by Stéphane Mac Millan and Hélène Briand, Verley develops functional dairy proteins through precision fermentation. The firm produces proteins that are molecularly identical to those in cow’s milk but with a significantly lower environmental footprint.
- These proteins are designed for industrial applications, enabling integration into existing dairy product lines while improving nutritional content, flavor, and texture.
- Verley’s process uses engineered microorganisms to ferment and produce specific dairy proteins at scale, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional milk production.
- The technology reduces greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption, and land use compared to traditional dairy farming. Rather than replacing conventional dairy, Verley’s approach complements it, creating a more resilient and environmentally friendly protein supply.

- The Series A also saw support from exsiting investors Sofinnova Partners, Sparkfood, CAPTECH Santé, and Founders Future.
- Verley will use the $38M Series A funding to accelerate its global expansion by ramping up production of its high-performance whey proteins, preparing for a commercial launch in the US and continuing R&D to enhance protein performance and efficiency.
- Following the US entry, the company plans to prioritize growth in Europe and the Middle East, ensuring it can meet rising global demand and establish itself as a leader in precision-fermented functional proteins.
"We believe Europe can lead in strategic food technologies. This new funding round raise reflects that ambition. Thank you to our investors, partners, and the entire Verley team building this with discipline and conviction," Verley's team, commented on LinkedIn.
