Munich-based Twogee Biotech, which converts biomass into high-value raw materials, has secured €2.2 million to scale up and commercialize its enzyme platform.
- Established in 2024 by Frank Wallrapp and Helge Jochens, Twogee Biotech develops customized enzyme solutions and production strains to convert low-value biomass residues into sustainable second-generation raw materials, particularly sugars for bio- and synthetic biology applications.
- The company’s technology combines enzyme screening, strain engineering, and fermentation through a predictive development platform, enabling more efficient biomass utilization, shortening development timelines, and reducing scale-up risk for industrial partners.
- Twogee supports the industrial conversion of agricultural residues such as wheat straw, corn stover, and bagasse into high-value compounds, including pure cellulose and 2G sugars, and offers a licensing model for local enzyme production to facilitate decentralized, low-emission, and circular biochemical value chains.
Details of the deal
- The round saw support from HTGF and Bayern Kapital as lead investors, with additional backing from AgriFoodTech Venture Alliance, Heinz Entsorgung, and early-stage support from BioM’s #MAxL incubator, XPRENEURS, and BayStartUP.
- Twogee Biotech will use the €2.2 million funding to accelerate the commercialization of its enzyme platform, expand its laboratory and bioreactor capabilities at the IZB, and enhance the team with expertise in process development and scale-up.
- The capital will also support further technology development, enable additional paid pilot projects with industrial partners, and implement a licensing model for local enzyme production at customer sites, promoting more efficient, low-emission, and circular biomass value chains.
