VC & Startup weekly news from CEE, January 6-12, 2024

Notable funding rounds across the EU:

  • Dutch developer of smart grind management system tibo energy has raised €3 million in a seed round led by Amsterdam-based SET Ventures. Austrian Speedinvest, together with the startup’s founding team, participated.
  • German real estate value management platform einwert has raised over €4 million in a round led by Ventech. The existing investors 468 Capital, Wecken & Cie, Auxxo Female Catalyst Fund, and Infinitas Capital also participated.
  • Spanish nanosatellite company Sateliot has closed a €6 million funding round from Banco Santander.
  • Swiss fintech Rivero has secured a $7 million Series A round led by 6 Degrees Capital and Inference Partners, with participation from Kraken Ventures, Seed X Liechtenstein, angel investors.
  • Italian biotech firm Mogu has secured €11 million in Series A. CDP Venture Capital and ECBF VC co-led the funding, Kering Ventures and Progress Tech Transfer joined.
  • Milan-based startup Contents.com has raised $18 million Series B investment. Investors include Synergo Capital, Azimut Digitech Fund, Invictus Capital, and Thomson Reuters Ventures.
  • Tier Mobility and Dott have announced a merger. The deal is backed by existing investors Mubadala Capital and Sofina with M&G, Prosus Ventures, Novator, Estari, and White Star Capital with €60 million.
  • The car subscription provider FINN has closed its Series C equity funding round of €100 million. The round was led by Planet First Partners, with participation from existing investors.
  • Dutch online grocery store Picnic raised €355 million. Investors include Germany’s largest supermarket group, Edeka, and The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Trust.

New venture funds:

  • Belgian angel investment group Syndicate One has completed an initial €4.8 million close of its debut fund, with more than 70 investors joined. The second closed is planned for early 2024.

CEE startup funding rounds & acquisitions:

  • Ukrainian CloudAvocado that develops a solution for AWS clients has closed a $50,000 pre-seed round from venture capital firm ZAS Ventures.
  • Georgian startup Wempler has secured a $330,000 pre-seed investment led by Czech Presto Ventures. $110,000 came from the angel investors.
  • Tar Heel Capital Pathfinder, EKIPA Investment and a private investor have backed Multilango.com with almost €400,000. Polish startup develops a platform enabling employers to offer foreign language learning as an employee benefit.
  • Estonian basketball fan engagement platform Scorestars has secured €725,000 in a seed round co-led by Trind VC, Startup Wise Guys, 3 Comma Capital.
  • Sofia-based startup Swipe.bg specializing in the buying and selling of used smartphones, secured €1.4 million from Vitosha Venture Partners and NV3.
  • Polish biotech Bioceltix has got over €2.5 million under the European Funds for a Modern Economy program of National Research and Development Center.
  • Riga-based robotic technology company Aerones has gained over €4 million in grant from EU Innovation Fund for wind turbine blade leading edge repair robot sets producing and deployment.
  • Bulgarian biotech Nasekomo has raised €8 million in a Series A round, led by private equity fund Invenio Partners and private investors.
  • Slovak Luigi’s Box, a developer of an intelligent product search and recommendations system for e-retailers, has acquired Persoo, its Czech competitor. The deal is valued in several millions.
  • Zendesk has acquired Tallinn-based Klaus, an AI-powered quality management platform. The amount of the deal is undisclosed.

Startup calls:

  • The ReaktorX startup accelerator has initiated a call for Central Eastern European companies to apply for the next batch of its program. The program offers €25,000 in funding, along with €75,000 in discounts/credits (AWS, Stripe, and other ReaktorX partners). Participants will also gain access to the accelerator's network and receive mentoring support. The application period is open until the 20th of January.
