Zurich-based startup RTDT Laboratories raises $4M to optimize wind turbines

Zurich-based RTDT Laboratories, which develops smart sensors and software solutions to optimize wind turbine performance and design, has raised $4 million in a funding round led by Swisscom Venture.

  • Founded in 2022 as a spin-off from ETH Zurich by Dr. Imad Abdallah, Aris Mukherjee, and Dr. Konstantinos Tatsis, RTDT Laboratories develops sensor and software systems designed to improve the performance and reliability of wind turbines.
  • The company’s core product, Aerosense, is a wireless, ultra-thin sensor patch that captures high-frequency aerodynamic and structural data directly from turbine blades.
  • Using a combination of pressure, motion, vibration, strain, and temperature sensors, the system provides detailed insights into blade behavior.
  • The data is processed through RTDT’s analytics platform, which delivers calibrated measurements, diagnostic insights, and operational recommendations aimed at optimizing turbine design, control systems, and maintenance strategies.
  • Aerosense can be installed in the field, in factories, or during testing, and operates autonomously with solar-powered battery management.

Details of the deal

  • The round was led by Swisscom Ventures, the venture capital arm of Swisscom AG, which invests in sectors including Telco and IT Cloud, DeepTech, Cybersecurity, Fintech, and AI-driven business models.

“For the first time, aerodynamic performance can be measured in real time, on the blade, in the field, at scale. That’s a breakthrough. This is the kind of step-change technology we look for and why we invested. I’m excited to work with this team as they bring their vision to life," claims Klea Wenger, Investemnt Director at Swisscom Ventures.

  • The investment also saw support from Rockstart, BackBone Ventures, Kickfund, Venture Kick, and Stadt Zürich through its Klimup program.
  • The $4 million raised will allow RTDT to accelerate product development, expand pilot deployments with industry partners, and strengthen its go-to-market strategy in Europe and beyond.
