Berlin's mental health startup HelloBetter raises €6M for international expansion

Berlin-based startup HelloBetter, a provider of evidence-based prescription digital therapeutics (PDTx) for mental health treatment, has raised over €6 million, led by Mutuelles Impact, for international expansion and AI development.

  • Founded in 2015 by David Ebert, Hanne Horvath, and Elena Heber, HelloBetter develops evidence-based prescription digital therapeutics (PDTx) for mental health treatment.
  • The company provides 10 scientifically validated online therapy courses that help individuals manage conditions such as stress, burnout, anxiety, panic attacks, chronic pain, vaginismus, and diabetes-related emotional distress.
  • HelloBetter offers clinically tested digital therapy programs covered by health insurance in Germany, making them free with a prescription. Patients can obtain a prescription from a doctor or telemedicine provider, upload it securely, and receive an access code to start their psychologist-supported online therapy.
  • The firm has over 150 employees in Berlin, Potsdam, and Hamburg. Its programs have benefited over 120,000 patients, and six of them have been approved by the German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM).

Details of the deal

  • The investment was led by Mutuelles Impact, a €95 million fund focused on social and environmental impact in health and medico-social initiatives, managed by XAnge. The funding round also included participation from MMV, HealthCap, Expon, and DvH Ventures.

“We are thrilled to support the German leader in Prescription-DTx its developments in France. HelloBetter has also proven to yield significant volumes of prescription activations in Germany and associated revenues, we believe it is well poised to continue generating economies of scale on the European market," claims Nadja Bresous Mehigan, Partner at XAnge Impact.

  • HelloBetter plans to use the funds for expanding into the French market, launching new AI-powered mental wellness products, and securing regulatory approval for reimbursement in France. The funds will also help expand its digital mental health solutions beyond the DACH region.

"This funding will enable us to do three things: become a household name for mental health in Germany, launch new, innovative products and, with the support of XAnge and its 65 Mutuelles partners, bring our proven digital mental health solutions to the French market," co-founder and CEO of Hannes Klöpper, commented.
