Paris-based life sciences venture capital firm Sofinnova Partners has closed its fourth MD Start fund at €82 million, with support from existing and new limited partners. The fund, which was oversubscribed, will back the creation of six to eight new medtech companies across Europe and the US over the next five years.
- Founded in 1972, Sofinnova Partners is a life sciences investor focused on healthcare and sustainability, managing more than €4 billion in assets. Its MD Start strategy focuses on building medtech companies from inception, combining capital with clinical, scientific, and operational support.
- Sofinnova MD Start IV will support companies from inception through key clinical and operational milestones. The strategy is led by Sofinnova Partners’ Anne Osdoit, Cécile Dupont, and Mano Iyer, alongside Principal Marion Gasperment.
- The new fund builds on Sofinnova MD Start III, a €63 million vehicle that invested in six companies. Those portfolio companies have collectively raised more than €140 million in follow-on financing.

- The previous portfolio includes LimFlow, which was acquired by Inari Medical for up to $415 million; PreCARDIA, acquired by Abiomed; and CorWave, which has raised more than €100 million. Other portfolio companies include BrightHeart and Moon Surgical, which have secured FDA and CE Mark clearances for their medical technologies.
- With the fresh capital, Sofinnova plans to expand its company-building activities and support new medtech ventures from early development through clinical and operational milestones.
