Sydney-based MP Space, which develops battery packs and power systems for spacecraft, has raised $16 million in a seed round led by Australian venture capital firm Blackbird. The round also included new investment from Systemiq Capital and Seraphim Space, alongside follow-on investment from existing backers Speedinvest and MFV Partners.
- Founded in 2024 by Jay Manley and Sam Paterson, MP Space develops hardware and software to generate, store and manage power for spacecraft.
- The company focuses on off-the-shelf battery packs designed to reduce costs and delivery times for satellite manufacturers, replacing bespoke systems that can take months to develop.
- MP Space's battery systems have been selected for missions involving more than 500 spacecraft, and the company already serves customers across North America, Europe, India and Australia. It aims to increase production to meet demand from satellite manufacturers and constellation operators.
Details of the deal
- The fresh capital will enable MP Space to scale manufacturing, develop power systems for larger spacecraft and expand its Australian engineering team, while broadening its offering beyond batteries to cover more of the spacecraft power infrastructure.
