Manchester-based startup Modern Milkman, which delivers groceries sustainably to homes, has raised £10 million in growth funding from Salica Investments, taking its total funding to over £60 million.
- Founded in 2019 by Simon Mellin, Modern Milkman sources fresh produce and household essentials from independent British suppliers and delivers them directly to homes in reusable glass bottles and returnable containers, supporting a closed-loop system that reduces single-use packaging.
- The company operates an app-based platform that manages automated routing and order processing to align deliveries with demand and minimize waste. Customers can schedule deliveries up to three times per week, add repeat orders for staples, and return empties for cleaning and reuse. Modern Milkman now serves over 100,000 households in the UK and expanded into the US in January 2024.
Details of the deal
- Modern Milkman will use the £10 million funding to scale its doorstep delivery model, enhancing its logistics and technology platform to manage high-frequency, automated deliveries more efficiently. The investment will support the rollout of additional integrated services, making sustainable shopping more convenient and accessible for households.
- It will also strengthen the company’s operational infrastructure, including its supply chain, reusable packaging system, and team, enabling the business to expand while reducing waste and environmental impact.
"This investment marks the next chapter. We're scaling our platform, strengthening our logistics, and making sustainable shopping even easier for the families and households who've backed us from the start," Modern Milkman's team, commented on LinkedIn.
