Dutch medtech startup AMT Medical raises $25M to transform heart bypass surgery

Ede-based medtech startup AMT Medical has raised $25 million in a Series B funding round to transform heart bypass surgery. The funding was led by Bender Analytical Holding B.V. (BAH), with support from Invest-NL and the European Innovation Council (EIC).

  • Founded in 2015 by Rutger Tulleken, AMT Medical develops the ELANA® Heart Bypass System, a sutureless solution for coronary artery bypass surgery performed on a beating heart.
  • The system uses a mechanical clip and excimer laser to connect a graft vessel to a coronary artery through small incisions, eliminating the need for open-chest access or a heart-lung machine.
  • Designed for standardization and robotic compatibility, ELANA reduces stroke risk, shortens recovery to days, and lowers costs by over 50% in robotic settings through faster procedures and reduced reliance on intensive care, according to the startup.

Details of the deal

“We are proud to support AMT as they work toward FDA clearance to bring their technology to the market in the U.S. This marks a key milestone in improving patient outcomes," CEO of Bender Analytical Holding, Johan Bender, commented.

  • With the $25 million in Series B funding, AMT Medical will complete its first European trial by late 2025 and expand into robotic-assisted surgery.
  • Additionally, the funding will help secure CE marking by 2026 and start U.S. clinical trials. The goal is to help 1 million patients a year with safer, faster, and more affordable heart bypass surgery.

“This financing validates our vision to obsolete open-heart bypass. By enabling same-day discharge procedures, we’re not just improving outcomes—we’re rewriting the future of cardiovascular care," claims Rutger Tulleken, CEO of AMT Medical.
