Danish biotech firm SNIPR BIOME secures €35M Series B funding round

Copenhagen-based SNIPR Biome, which develops CRISPR-based microbial gene therapies to precisely target and treat serious diseases by engineering the human microbiome, has raised €35 million in a Series B funding round to advance CRISPR medicines targeting antimicrobial resistance.

  • Established in 2017 by Christian Grøndahl, Morten O. A. Sommer, and Jasper Clube, SNIPR Biome develops CRISPR-based microbial gene therapies aimed at precisely targeting harmful bacteria while preserving the beneficial ones within the human microbiome.
  • The company’s technology harnesses the natural bacterial CRISPR-Cas system to selectively kill pathogenic bacteria or remove antibiotic resistance genes, offering a highly targeted approach to treating complex and difficult-to-manage diseases such as cystic fibrosis infections, multidrug-resistant infections, and certain cancers.
  • By engineering live bacteria to deliver these gene-editing tools directly within the gut or other parts of the body, SNIPR Biome creates what can be described as gut-directed gene therapy, using bacteria as programmable delivery vehicles to produce therapeutic molecules in situ.
  • This method differs from traditional antibiotics by sparing the wider microbial community, potentially reducing side effects and limiting the development of resistance.
  • Since its founding, the company has grown to a team of over 30 scientists and has raised more than $90 million to advance its pipeline, including clinical trials of its lead candidate, SNIPR001, targeting bloodstream infections in cancer patients.

Details of the deal

“This financing marks a pivotal milestone for SNIPR BIOME as we advance the clinical development of SNIPR001 for the prevention of blood stream infections and continue to expand our infectious disease pipeline targeting pathogens of critical importance," claims Christian Grøndahl, co-founder and CEO of SNIPR BIOME.
