Mistral secures $830M to build first AI data centre in France

Paris-based AI startup Mistral, which is valued at €11.7 billions, has secured $830  million in debt financing to purchase NVIDIA chips for its first data center, equipping it with 13,800 GB300 GPUs and a powered capacity of 44 MW.

  • Launched in 2023 by Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample, and Timothée Lacroix, Mistral AI is an artificial intelligence startup focused on building open-source AI systems. The company develops software and infrastructure that allow organizations to train, fine-tune, and deploy AI models on cloud, on-premises, edge, or device environments while retaining control over their data.
  • Its technology includes tools for model training, synthetic data generation, lifecycle management, autonomous agents, and workflow orchestration. Mistral AI works with clients across sectors such as manufacturing, technology, and logistics, providing systems that integrate proprietary data into AI models and support operational deployment.

Details of the deal

  • The funding round was backed by a consortium of seven banks, including Bpifrance, BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole CIB, HSBC, La Banque Postale, MUFG, and Natixis CIB.

  • The $830 million in new funding is intended to support Mistral’s first data center near Paris, boost its AI infrastructure with 13,800 NVIDIA GPUs, and enable the company to scale to 200 MW of AI capacity across Europe by 2027, helping governments and enterprises develop their own sovereign AI systems.
