Austrian fonio.ai lands $17M to build the AI-first operating system for SMBs

Vienna-based fonio.ai, an AI platform focused on customer communication for small and medium-sized businesses, has raised $17 million in a seed funding round at a $140 million valuation. Total funding now stands at over $20 million, as Vestbee was informed.

  • Founded in 2024 by Daniel Keinrath and Matthias Gruber, fonio.ai develops AI-powered voice agents designed to handle high volumes of business phone interactions. 
  • The system answers inbound and outbound calls, processes speech in real time, and manages full conversations using technologies such as advanced turn detection, emotion-aware response modeling, and live integrations with business tools including calendars and CRM systems. When necessary, the platform can escalate calls to human agents or schedule follow-ups.
  • Companies integrate fonio.ai with either a dedicated or existing phone line, configure call-handling rules, and allow the system to autonomously manage customer inquiries, appointment booking, support requests, and lead qualification. 
  • The product is also expanding beyond voice, with WhatsApp already supported and additional messaging and email channels in development.

Details of the deal

  • The round was led by 20VC, with participation from existing investors as well as founders and executives from Synthesia, HubSpot, and Revolut.

  • The new funding will be used to accelerate international expansion and further product development. This includes building an omnichannel communication layer that extends beyond voice, as well as developing AI-native tools such as a proprietary CRM and calendar system. 
  • The company also plans to scale its engineering and commercial teams while expanding its presence across key global markets.
