Munich-based startup Emidat, which uses AI to streamline the creation of environmental product declarations (EPDs) for construction materials and helps to reduce costs and track embodied carbon impact, has raised €4 million in a seed funding round led by General Catalyst. The fresh funds will be used to enhance commercial efforts for upcoming EU regulations and to continue product development.
- Founded in 2023 by Lisa Oberaigner and Florian Fesch, Emidat develops an AI-powered platform that simplifies the creation of environmental product declarations (EPDs) for construction materials, helping manufacturers lower costs and effectively track the embodied carbon in buildings.
- Emidat enables manufacturers to upload product data easily via API, Excel, or BIM (building information modeling). The platform also provides insights through industry benchmarking and analyzes 3D models to forecast emissions based on the materials proposed for construction.
- The startup has partnered with leading global suppliers of construction materials, including three of the largest concrete manufacturers. It currently has 25 customers using its platform for around 350 construction projects, and its database includes information on over 150,000 construction products across 13 categories.
Details of the deal
- The seed funding round was led by General Catalyst, a California-based venture capital firm with offices in San Francisco, New York City, Boston, Berlin, Bangalore, and London, which has supported the growth of over 700 businesses, including Airbnb, Anduril, and Applied Intuition.
- As the EU prepares to implement mandatory standards for building product declarations next month, Emidat is developing an operating system for environmental data in construction to help architects, project developers, and contractors make informed material choices using Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).
- The startup will use the raised capital to boost its commercial efforts in anticipation of these regulations and to enhance its product development.
"We started Emidat to make it fast and easy for manufacturers to create high-quality EPDs, LCAs and PCFs for their products and get rewarded for their efforts on decarbonization. We can see that this hit a nerve," Co-founder and CEO of Emidat, Lisa Oberaigner, stated.
