Amsterdam-based startup CarbonX receives €2.5M Accelerator Grant

Amsterdam-based startup CarbonX, which enhances battery performance and sustainability by producing innovative 3D carbon structures, has received a €2.5 million Accelerator Grant from the European Innovation Council (EIC) to accelerate product development and market expansion.

  • Founded in 2014 by Rutger Van Raalten and Daniela Sordi, CarbonX creates an advanced anode material that boosts battery performance. Its unique 3D carbon network structure enhances the transfer of electrons and lithium, resulting in faster charging and longer range.
  • The material is produced using a low-energy process, reducing CO2 emissions compared to traditional graphite. CarbonX's technology can be integrated into existing carbon black plants, helping create localized supply chains in Europe and the US.

Details of the deal

  • The funding includes a €2.5 million grant and a €5 million equity package from the European Innovation Council (EIC) through the EIC Accelerator.
  • The program offers startups and SMEs grants of up to €2.5 million and equity investments ranging from €0.5 million to €15 million (up to €10 million in 2025). It also provides access to Business Acceleration Services, connecting projects with experts, investors, and corporate partners.
  • CarbonX plans to use the capital to accelerate product development, expand its market presence, and establish an independent European supply chain for critical battery materials.

“I am very proud of this accomplishment, successfully coming through a tough application process and completing rigorous due diligence – this is great validation of our technology and demonstrates a complete product offering at the right price. With support of the EIC we will accelerate the realisation of a fully independent European supply chain for critical battery materials," explains Rutger van Raalten, CEO of CarbonX.
